IT IS FATHER'S DAY

My Dad

He was born in 1903

He did not finish high school

Most of his life he worked as a barber

Then for a while building Oak Ridge

Then it was back in the barber shop

He raised three boys in a 24x24 foot house

He drove old cars

To go fishing he helped make a boat

He made a garden

And had chicken, a couple of pigs

And a cow that was of course milked daily

So we could eat

I donít think I ever told him I was grateful

In high school I remember well

He usually dropped me at school

It was near the shop where he worked

After standing on his feet cutting hair

For over eight hours he drove the old car home

We would hear him park in the street out front

We then went out to help him to the house

Arthritis was so very bad

I never asked him if he found meaning

In cutting hair

I never heard him say he was called

To cut hair

He cut hair because there was a wife and

Three boys to feed

A mortgage to pay

And other expenses

Dad, if you are looking over the parapet

Of Heaven

I am deeply grateful for the courage

You taught me

And the view of Jesus you gave me

And the sense of place and family
