Decoration day was yesterday

Decoration Day

In a little while we will go to the Elrod Cemetery

It is the burial site for Carolyn’s fathers family

It begins with John Howell

He served in the North Carolina Continental Line

He fought to free us from England

He was given land here on a bounty

He has a military head stone

It has a DAR marker on it

Every generation since then is represented

Unlike my family all of them fought for the CSA

Like my own family the Scots Irish

Tend to be warriors

We put flowers on their graves

Honoring those who lived with strong values

Values strong enough to die for

We pause and meet and talk to others

Whose kin are burried here

They talk of years gone by

They talk of community

Lastly we go by the grave of our son “Bruiser”

I stop and remember how wonderful he was

I thank God for him

I take comfort that He is with The Father

It is good on Decoration Day

To reaffirm our values how we treat and serve

Country

Community

Family

Friends

Strangers in our midst

And to reaffirm

We owe all these things to Jesus
