true friends are of value

Old Will’s Advice

Will Shakespear is often quoted

I loved to read him and wonder why I quit

“Those friends thou has, and their adoption tried,

Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel.”

This weekend

We have been to Nashville twice

An hour and half each way

Reinforcing this truth

The reasons for the trips

One was to sit with a dear dear friend

Who struggles for life

And with her family, praying and remembering

Wishing I had stayed closer

The other was to have dinner

At my college room mates

Along with Fred there were others there

The shortest friendship in the group is over thirty years

These seven couples

Have seen it all, the good, the bad and the beautiful

Years ago we often said

“we need to get together soon”

And someone said” at out house Sunday night”

For a dozen years we have been meeting at least a half dozen times a year

Renewing relationships, catching up

Praying for one another

Keeping the ties that bind strong

What a gift of God

Are there friends out there that you miss

Old ones who remember what you find of interest or value

Those who have watched the years fly by with you

And those who have just entered your world

That bring fresh stories and fresh friendship

Let us resolve to as Will put it to

Grapple them to your soul with bands of steel

I can assure you that the effort will be rewarded far more

Than you can even imagine

Begin with a phone call, a note, a visit

But begin Now
